I think it's almost a condition of residency that I try surfing at least once, and today was that day. L had suggested we get a lesson or two and so we set off to Muriwai on the west coast to get instruction from the good people at Muriwai Surfing School. After a lazy few hours enjoying the sun and hot, hot sand, we set off to the school and suited up.
I had initially thought that 30 minutes of theory and an hour of surfing was not going to be long enough. Getting lucky early on and actually managing to catch a wave or two made me think that I could be out there for HOURS. How wrong I was! After an hour of paddling, jumping, swallowing water, surfing, wading, jumping, swallowing more water etc. etc. I was physically exhausted. L managed to get the odd surf in too, but found it pretty hard going by the end as well. The instructors were great but my god was it a good test of core and upper body strength! I certainly feel like I worked off the smoked fish pie and salad from earlier.
L is feeling pretty rough now so instead of going to a birthday party we're having some downtime, before hopefully going to see The Room later tonight with boyfriend and a friend of his. I am not expecting much.
