There's passing, and there's passing...

It's stupid hot in Auckland at the moment. As is traditional with the start of the school year, me being stuffed back into a classroom coincides with 70-80% humidity and temperatures in the high twenties. It's not weather for the sweat-averse, and that's just if you're sitting down. Working out and derby training take on an extra level in these conditions, and it takes a lot of teeth-gritting to get up off my ass and to the gym or the rink, an to put in the hard yards when I'm there. However, I made the gym every day this week before work, skated Wednesday and Thursday (and got chairs thrown at me) and managed to keep with the healthy eating, which makes me feel pretty chuffed I can tell you.

Today was the final training session before the skills test on the 13th February, and it was a blast. After weeks of failing to make the straight and a turn whilst skating on one leg, we were told today that we only need to be able to do it round a straight. The result? I can now skate on my right leg along one straight and a turn. Chalk that up to mind over matter methinks.

Jumping also seemed to be way easier today. I remembered my partner's wise words about target fixation and, coupled with not having to jump over obstacles as high as last time, and it was fine.

We went over pretty everything that's going to be in the test next week and I have to say I'm feeling pretty good about all of it. Not enough to order the name and number shirt JUST yet, but certainly feeling pretty happy that all the effort I've put in will bear fruit.

The thing is, I don't just want to pass. I don't just want to do 25 laps in five minutes, or do OK at the written test. I want to ace it, prove to myself that I'm good enough. good enough for what exactly I'm not sure at this stage, just, y'know, good. Really good.

There's a week to go until I take my February pictures for this blog, to see if there's been any change. I'm almost slightly apprehensive about it...
