Onward, upward and elsewhere

Well, hasn't this been a busy couple of weeks! I finished my last post on a bit of a downer and then the real world caught up real fast and I've been making some big changes (when don't I?). So, what is haps?

  • The cast came off the day before my parents flew out. The doctor who assessed me had a student in with him and as a result I was spoken to almost exclusively in the third person, which would have been more annoying and unnerving if the guy wasn't obviously at the top of his game and REALLY knew his bones. Apparently, everything is healing perfectly and I'm expected to make a full recovery, with an estimated time of six months to when I'm back to how I was the day the accident happened. Top drawer.
  • I've been walking and swimming as often as I can to build up my muscles (my left calf is weirdly withered and I've lost a bit of cardio fitness). Today I managed to swim a mile without stopping, which is quite reassuring in terms of regaining my fitness. The ankle is now only sore if it's still for any length of time but improving by the day. I have an appointment with the specialist next week and I'll know more about the next step and how I'm progressing. I'm hoping for a glowing report, I'm a bit nervous.
  • After wanting it for about four years (I remember looking at flats in Glasgow back in early 2008) I finally took the plunge and got my own place. I now live in a cute one-bedroom flat near the city centre, and the money I made from selling my bike (yes, she was repaired and sold! Yay!) has gone on buying some really nice things for my new place. I can't really describe how it feels to be sitting on a new couch knowing that it's mine, or coming home to a flat that's how I want it, with my food in the fridge and my tunes on the stereo. It sounds very petty I know, but to me this is pretty damn important, and it feels like a step in the right direction.
  • My mountain bike's in for a long overdue service, my dive gear's getting checked over, I'm booked in for a dive refresher course the week I get seen by the doctor (assuming I get the go-ahead) and I'm going surfing in Northland at the end of November. you can tell summer's on it's way.
So where does that leave a certain 5 on 5 game that's the point of this blog? In limbo at present. I'm bench managing a game for the NZ derby team next weekend, looking forward to being able to skate again and maybe getting back into coaching for next season. I like the idea of it being part of my life in some form, but at the moment the idea of a full-on scrimmage leaves me cold. I also want to do a lot of other things with my spare time too (see the above equipment list) and I don't want one sport to dominate everything. I've been thinking about joining team zebra (the refs) but it doesn't really appeal at this stage. Given that almost all the injuries I sustained this year have been from jamming, I doubt I'll ever wear the star on my helmet again, but I'm not ruling out a return to blocking at some point. I'm feeling a bit more positive about it now I'm back in Auckland and out the cast, but it's all in the future at the moment.

Watch this space I guess...
